How Reducing Friction Makes Habits Easier to Start
Habits are not built by motivation alone.
A habit is more likely to happen when it is easy to start. If the first step is inconvenient, hidden, or unclear, we are more likely to delay it.
Not because we don't care, but because the starting point has too much friction.
In The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg popularised the idea of the habit loop, which consists of cue, routine and reward. The cue is the trigger, the routine is the behaviour, and the reward is the payoff that makes the behaviour worth repeating.
That matters because the action itself is only part of the habit.
The behaviour is triggered by what happens before it and what happens after it.
If the cue is weak, the action is less likely to start.
If the action is difficult to begin, the routine has more resistance.
If the reward is unclear, the habit is less likely to repeat.
So one useful way to support a habit is to make the start easier.
This is where reducing friction matters.
Packing a bag the night before does not complete the next day’s journey, but it changes the morning. The first step is easier because what you need is already gathered, the decision is smaller, and there is one less obstacle between intention and action.
The same idea applies beyond personal habits.
A friend of mine fills up the printer or photocopier with paper after they’ve used it.
That small action does not finish anyone else’s work, but it makes the next person’s work easier to start.
It is a practical form of consideration. It removes a small frustration before someone else reaches it.
Preparation works like this too.
Before assembling flat-pack furniture, laying out the parts and checking the quantities may not feel like progress. Nothing has been built yet. But the work has been made easier to begin, and a possible problem has been found before it interrupts the task halfway through.
Writing can work the same way.
Starting a report from a blank page can feel heavier than continuing one that already has a sentence on it. One sentence written the day before does not finish the report, but it gives the next session somewhere to begin.
In each case, the action matters because it changes the start point.
This is useful to remember when writing an Eightly list.
Not every item has to complete something.
Some items matter because they make the next action easier or clearer.
When the start is easier, the action is more likely to happen.
That is why reducing friction can change the conditions for what comes next.
